A new favorite author

Thanks to a book review from my mother-in-law Janice, I’ve discovered a new writer that I absolutely love.

Ruth Reichl.

She is a food critic/food writer who has written several books, including Tender at the Bone (memoir) and Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise.

The book my mother-in-law recommended to me was Tender at the Bone and I immediately checked it out from the library. Then my homework suffered for a couple of days while I tried to gobble down the whole thing in almost one sitting (only managing to tear myself away from the book by stuffing it behind the couch — out of sight, out of mind). Bottom line, it’s an amazing book. She is an incredible storyteller who loves food …. pretty much my dream author, I guess. Her stories are all about the experiences she has had — growing up in New York, going to school in Montreal, living with a houseful of hippies in California. Throughout the book you are introduced to all kinds of colorful and interesting people, and the theme of food ties it all together. There’s even a recipe in each chapter.

I can’t wait to get my hands on more of her books. I’m especially excited about Garlic and Sapphires, which is supposedly about her life as a food critic and all the crazy disguises she would come up with to keep restauranteurs from recognizing her. So exciting, yes?

If you like food and good writing, you should check her out.
